New Band and Debut Album

Since having asked around our friends to act in our video, Becky, Will and Ethan have kindly agreed to help us. We have had to create a new band name and think of a name/design for their debut album. We have decided to call the new band 'Elation of Faith' and the debut album for our band will be called 'Out of Mime'. We think the name and album is catchy and will be appealing to our audience.

Update - Filming

After many complications with the band and being let down numerous times, we came to a mutual agreement that we would hire actors to sing the bands song and then credit the band at the end of the video. We have asked some of our college friends who are happy to help us and we are going to set dates for filming very soon. Also, we have changed our video to concept, making the video about love in general and how someone will always be there to tell you not to worry, whether it be from family or friends. We will now not need all of our shot lists and story boards but will slightly change some of them accordingly as we are still going keep the majority of shots the same, such as the band shots .

Storyboard - Baby shots

Over the half term I am going to be filming the Baby shots. Here is my hand drawn story board for shots of the baby. I have only simply sketched 5 vital shots as these are not as prominent in the video so we do not need loads and if we get any more than 5 it shall be a bonus.

BAND CRISIS

Today Ellie and I contacted the band regarding filming dates and times but we've had some problems, again! The problem is that the band all work and go to college throughout the week so the only time they said that we would be able to film them is on a Saturday. We wanted to film them in the school drama hall but we are unsure whether we can because it would be on a weekend, so we have contacted the head teacher at the Nelthorpe site to get permission, were just waiting for a reply.

(GROUP POST) Locations - Celtx

Here are some photographs that I took of possible locations we could use for our narrative shots in our video.

Email for copyright and response

Ellie sent an email to the distributors of the original 'Don't you worry child' from the both of us asking for permission to use their song for our video. The person who replied, Daniel, was very polite and obliging, he said that as long as it is only for the purpose of our coursework then it was okay to use. This is the email we sent and the reply we received:

(GROUP POST) Target Audience Research - Survey

Target Audience Research - Ideas

Ellie and I have decided to target our music video at young adults around the age of 18-30. In order to perfect our video and make it appealing to our audience we want to ask questions that will give us a good idea of what they want in a music video.

Some of the questions we want to ask are:

  • Do you prefer a narrative or performance based music video? or a bit of both?
  • What location would you prefer to see; outdoors or studio?
  • Do you like to get a certain feeling from a music video?
  • As the shots in the video change, would you like to see a change in colour? eg. colour to black and white
  • How do you like the artist/s to dress; casual or dressed up?

Hopefully the answers we receive will help to clarify our ideas and construct a video that will directly target our chosen audience.

Photo montage video

Using my own photographs and images from the internet I have created a 'Slidely' collage to create a feel of what our music video may be like. The images are of locations, costumes, actors and musicians. Hopefully it will also help to clarify our ideas on colour schemes and locations.

Black Eyed Peas - Where is the love?
Genre: R & B
Style: Performance and Concept based

I have chosen to analyse this music video because I think that some of the locations could be replicated and would look good in the rap part of the video.

I like this shot because it allows the audience to see the full background which is very relevant to the song. If we were to replicate a shot like this, we would have to choose an area with lots of graffiti to match with the rap.

This is a good shot because its a medium close up which helps the artist to interact with the audience and engage them in the lyrics as well as allowing them to still see the background. I also like this shot because you can get a good shot of the artist singing/rapping into camera and therefore supporting the conventions of a music video.

For a different shot we could easily find a location like this and replicate it similarly. It is simple yet effective as the grey background contrasts well with the man's dark clothing which makes him stand out. We could have a shot like this that transitions into a close up to show the artist rapping into camera.

Child Consent Form

As we are using people under the age of 18 for our video, we have to have permission from their parent. This is the consent form that we are going to give out.

YouTube

Youtube is the most well know global institution and the commonly used music video site there is. You can literally find any music video you want in a matter of seconds. You can even make an account in order to create your own playlists to listen to any music you wish.

iTunes

iTunes are a big institution that are owned by Apple, a worldwide and very well known company. iTunes are well known for selling digital copies of singles and albums which is why they are so popular, they also sell music videos as well as just audio. More people now buy digital copies of music which has resulted in companies such as HMV going into liquidation because there aren't many sales on physical copies of songs. Another reason why iTunes is so popular is because when people buy a physical copy of a CD, they may not want to listen to all songs whereas with iTunes you can buy the songs individually.

Update - Locations

Ellie and I are yet to conduct a target audience survey in which we shall ask what locations they prefer, but here are some shots from existing music videos that I like and think we could take inspiration from.

This shot is from Tom Odell's music video 'Can't pretend'. If we were to chose a studio location I would like it too look like this, quite dark and hazy. I think it would help to create an atmosphere for the audience because the song isn't upbeat. Also the props used such as the microphone and piano is something that I think we want our band to have because they use them anyway and it shows that it is an original cover of the official song because it includes instruments such as a piano or guitar whereas the official song doesn't .

Another location I like from a different video is Janet Devlins 'wonderful'. The video has been shot outside, during the day and the night. I like these two shots, the trees and sky and Janet Devlin on a boat. Ellie and I didn't want our actor to actually go onto the water but we want her to walk next to the lake so a setting like this would be suitable. I think a shot like this of the trees and sky could be used to fill out our video when we do the outdoor lake/woods scene. It looks effective and could link back to our story of 'thinking' about the past and the future.

We have decided on the name 'Ellbeck' for our production company and this is going to be our logo:

(GROUP POST) - Our Video - Script Draft

Darren from Blueprint came into Sixth Form and spoke to us and gave us advice for our music videos. He spoke to us a whole class group and then in our individual groups. Our initial ideas for our music video were lots of literal narrative shots and shots of the band singing on stage but after speaking to Darren we have changed a few things.

The basic outline of our video is going to be based around a girl who has grown up and is looking at her life in the past and the present. Our potential actors include mine and Ellie's family members and friends but this is yet to be confirmed. The video shall possibly start out with a quick shot of Alex, one of the band members, playing two notes on the piano to match the beat of the song. It will then cut to the first scene where Ellie's sister, who will be the eldest model, shall be laid on a bed having flashbacks to when she was a young happy child. In the second scene there will be shots of our eldest actor walking by a lake, this will be complemented with performance shots of the band, especially on some of the chorus. In the 3rd scene it will consist of narrative and performance shots to show a break up, this will probably include Ellie's sister and a male actor. The song contains a rap part which will contain performance and narrative shots, it is quite fast paced so the shots shall also cut quickly. The video shall end with footsteps walking towards and away from the camera with a bright light, this shall either be the band or our actors but we haven't decided yet.

The shots/movements that we are potentially going to use throughout the video are:

  • High Angles
  • Close Ups
  • Long Shots
  • Zooms
  • Focus Pull
  • Mid Shots
  • Fast/Slow pans
  • Dissolves
  • Fades
  • Extreme Close Ups
  • Under cranking and Over Cranking
  • Low Angles

Digipaks

Ellie and I have been researching for our ancillary products and we have found some inspiration for our digipak. From looking at existing digipaks from the same genre we have found that some would not appeal to our target audience but we could make some changes so that they would be suitable. Here is an example that Ellie found:

Ellie and I both liked this and were attracted to it because of the Butterfly. We could take inspiration from this to create our own digipak but use a feather instead as this is the logo for our band. The design is simple but eye catching and could be quite easy to replicate.

This is a digipak that I found which I thought we could replicate if we decided to have the band on the cover. I like the way that the band are positioned on the photo and the use of instruments as props, also the mise en scene fits the acoustic genre.

Here are some photos that I've found that would look suitable for our digipak:

Mise En Scene

Costume

Ellie and I have decided that we want our band to have quite a casual look. We are going to create this look by getting the band to dress in certain types of clothing we think would suit. I think clothing like this on the left for the boys would look good as it reflects the bands young personality and also looks casual. For the female member, I think the either a slouchy jumper/shirt with jeans or simple dark coloured dress with tights. The music video shall be released in winter so the band would look amiss if they were wearing shorts and summer dresses.

Make Up

To match the causal look, Id like Ashleigh to wear simple and natural make up. Here are some examples:

I like this eye make up because it is simple but defines the eye and makes them stand out.

I'd like Ashleigh to have a light cover of foundation and powder with a little bit of blusher and bronzer on the cheeks, this will just help to contour the cheeks but still maintain
 a natural look.

A simple gloss like this would look good and compliment the overall natural look.

Hair

I like this hair style, we could easily replicate this either with or without a full fringe.

This is another hair style I like and think we could do because it is easy yet looks good.

We don't have much control over the boys hair as they already have there own style but they will still fit our casual look. Here are some hairstyles that are similar to theirs:

Props

If we are to use props, these are a few that we could use:

A hat like this could be used because they are fashionable and would compliment the overall casual look.

There is a guitar playing throughout the video so we could possible have one of the band members playing when we film.

Representation is the process by which the media is presented to the real world. Dyer, one of the representation theorists has stated 'How we are seen determines how we are treated, how we treat others is based on how we see them'. This means that in order for our target audience to treat our band like stars, they will have to look like stars. The costumes, make up and hair all help to create this look so it is vital that we choose the correct outfits.

Institutional Research (6)

Recently there was a article published about the classification of music videos. At the moment a music video does not have to be over viewed by the BBFC (British board of film classification) but that is possibly set to change soon because of the concern that children are exposed to graphic imagery. On the BBFC website it says 'Under the Video Recordings Act 1984, some video content does not need to be rated by the BBFC'  but a pilot scheme is being introduced on Friday 3rd October 2014 to hopefully initiate age ratings on all music videos. Although the pilot is imminent, viewers of videos will see no difference until the system is fully in place.

Similarly to film trailers, the BBFC will review music videos and rate them on age suitability, ranging from PG to 18.

There has been mixed responses from this, a few relieved parents but some disgruntled artists. Some people have said that age ratings are appropriate because so many underage minors have access to violent and sexual content in music videos but others have disagreed saying it will only provoke some artists to make more provocative videos. Companies such as 'YouTube', 'Universal' and 'Vevo' are to support the system and have all agreed to sign up but the pilot will only effect UK Artists.

Prime minister David Cameron has spoken out declaring that there should be no difference between the online and offline world. "So if you want to go and buy a music video offline there are age restrictions on it. We should try and recreate that system on the internet."

There is a worry that naive children and young adults take too much inspiration from certain music videos and artists. For example, Miley Cyrus. Known for being a sweet and innocent child actor but also known for her explicit music videos, parents have a cause for concern. I'm sure most parents would agree that they wouldn't want their child to be exposed to that behaviour and think that it is okays to act the way she does. A classification will allow parents to monitor what they want their children to see and I think that is why the system will be largely supported.

(GROUP POST) - Looking at the original version

The original version of Don't you worry child is an up beat song with a bass. Ellie and I have decided to do the band's version as we think it'll be easier to film because the shot length will be longer and the song is more relatable. The original video consists of the song being played in nightclubs which is generally where this song is played. However the video we are looking at isn't suitable to be played in that sort of location so we obviously aren't going to film in them sort of locations. The shots in the original video are short but are also in slow motion. Ellie and I are looking to use a longer shot length however we may also use slow motion for effect.
